The simple past tense with -ER verbs

In this topic, we look at the preterite conjugation for regular -ER verbs:

First, drop the -er ending to get the verb root, and then add the following endings:

• For yo add -í so for example comer ⇒ comí

• For tú add -iste so comer ⇒ comiste

• For él, ella, usted add -ió so comer ⇒ comió

• For nosotros, nosotras add -imos so comer ⇒ comimos

• For vosotros, vosotras add -isteis so comer ⇒ comisteis

• For ellos, ellas, ustedes add -ieron so comer ⇒ comieron

Examples:
	Yo comí una manzana. I ate an apple. manzana means 'apple' comer ⇒ comí (the root com + -í ending for yo)
	Tú bebiste agua. You (familiar) drank water. beber ⇒ bebiste (the root beb + -iste ending for tú)
	El profesor no vendió su coche. The teacher did not sell his car. vender ⇒ vendió (the root vend + -ió ending for él, ella, usted)
	Nosotros aprendimos español. We learned Spanish. aprender ⇒ aprendimos (the root aprend + -imos ending for nosotros, nosotras)
	Vosotros comprendisteis la lección. You all (familiar) understood the lesson. comprender means 'to understand' comprender ⇒ comprendisteis (the root comprend + -isteis ending for vosotros, vosotras)
	Los niños corrieron en el parque. The children ran in the park. correr ⇒ corrieron (the root corr + -ieron ending for ellos, ellas, ustedes)
	Juan barrió el suelo. Juan swept the floor. barrer means 'to sweep' suelo means 'floor' barrer ⇒ barrió (the root barr + -ió ending for él, ella, usted)
	La niña metió la llave en la cerradura. The girl put the key in the lock. meter en means 'to put in' llave means 'key' cerradura means 'lock' meter ⇒ metió (the root met + -ió ending for él, ella, usted)
	Vosotros rompisteis la ventana. You all (familiar) broke the window. romper means 'to break' ventana means 'window' romper ⇒ rompisteis (the root romp + -isteis ending for vosotros, vosotras)
	Las chicas volvieron a casa. The girls returned home. volver means 'to return' volver ⇒ volvieron (the root volv + -ieron ending for ellos, ellas, ustedes)
	Mi hermano y yo barrimos la acera. My brother and I swept the sidewalk. acera means 'sidewalk' barrer ⇒ barrimos (the root barr + -imos ending for nosotros, nosotras)
	Mis padres comieron una ensalada. My parents ate a salad. ensalada means 'salad' comer ⇒ comieron (the root com + -ieron ending for ellos, ellas, ustedes)
	El estudiante aprendió a nadar. The student learned to swim. aprender ⇒ aprendió (the root aprend + -ió ending for él, ella, usted)
