The relative pronouns el cual (masc.), la cual (fem.), los cuales (masc. plural), and las cuales (fem. plural) are used to provide more specific or formal connections between clauses. These pronouns should agree in gender and number with the nouns they refer to. They are most commonly combined with a prepositional phrase to express the relation between the two clauses. Common relative clause phrases include (in masculine singular form): • cerca del cual means 'next to which' -- Recall the contraction de + el cual ⇒ del cual. • detrás del cual means 'behind which' • delante del cual means 'in front of which' • por el cual means 'for which' or 'by which' • en el cual means 'in which' or 'on which' • con el cual means 'with which' • sin el cual means 'without which' |
