The passive voice in the preterite tense

The passive voice is used to emphasize the action being performed, rather than the doer.

-- In English the passive voice looks like: 'something was done [by…]'.

The passive voice can be in several tenses. In this lesson we will focus on the preterite tense.

In the preterite tense, the passive voice is formed by combining the preterite tense conjugation of verb ser with the past participle of the main verb.

-- Recall that the preterite tense conjugation of verb ser is: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis and fueron.

The past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject of the sentence.

The past participle changes its ending to reflect gender and number in the following manner:

-- Add -o ending for masculine singular, -a for feminine singular, -os for masculine plural, and -as for feminine plural.

The agent performing the action can be included using por ('by') but is often omitted.

Examples:
	El pastel fue comido por los niños. The cake was eaten by the children. (el pastel is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (el pastel is masculine singular) comer ⇒ comido
	El arroz fue comido por los adultos. The rice was eaten by the adults. (el arroz is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (el arroz is masculine singular) comer ⇒ comido
	Las manzanas fueron comidas por los pájaros. The apples were eaten by the birds. (las manzanas is 3rd person plural) ser ⇒ fueron (las manzanas is feminine plural) comer ⇒ comidas
	Los plátanos fueron comidos por los monos. The bananas were eaten by the monkeys. (los plátanos is 3rd person plural) ser ⇒ fueron (los plátanos is masculine plural) comer ⇒ comidos
	¿El pastel fue comido por quién? The cake was eaten by whom? (el pastel is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (el pastel is masculine singular) comer ⇒ comido
	El brócoli no fue comido. The broccoli was not eaten. (el brócoli is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (el brócoli is masculine singular) comer ⇒ comido
	¿Por qué no fue comido el brócoli? Why wasn't the broccoli eaten? (el brócoli is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (el brócoli is masculine singular) comer ⇒ comido
	Mi tarea fue comida por el perro. My homework was eaten by the dog. (mi tarea is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (mi tarea is feminine singular) comer ⇒ comida

	No fue creído por su maestro. He was not believed by his teacher. (él is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (él is masculine singular) creer ⇒ creído

	Esta película fue filmada en Montmartre por un director muy conocido. This film was shot in Montmartre by a well-known director. (esta película is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (esta película is feminine singular) filmar ⇒ filmada
	La ambulancia fue llamada por los transeúntes. The ambulance was called by passers-by. (la ambulancia is 3rd person singular) ser ⇒ fue (la ambulancia is feminine singular) llamar ⇒ llamada
