Definite Relative Pronouns - 'the one(s) that'

The pronouns el que, la que, los que and las que are specific to the noun they refer to, changing based on number and gender.

They are used to refer to specific nouns and agree in gender and number with the noun they replace.

In English this would be 'the one(s) that' or 'that one(s) who'.

Examples:
Hay dos gatos. El que está a la izquierda es un macho.
There are two cats. The one on the left is a male.

macho (m) means 'male'

Tenemos dos coches. El que está en el garaje es mío.
(We) have two cars. The one in the garage is mine.
Hay tres libros en la mesa. El que está abierto es mío.
There are three books on the table. The one that is open is mine.
Hay dos sillas en la cocina. La que está rota necesita reparación.
There are two chairs in the kitchen. The one that is broken needs repair.
Hay varias casas en venta. La que está cerca del parque es muy cara.
There are several houses for sale. The one that is near the park is very expensive.

cara (adj) means 'expensive'

Tenemos cinco gatos. Los que son negros son hermanos.
(We) have five cats. The ones that are black are siblings.

negro (adj) means 'black'

hermano (m) means 'sibling'

Hay muchos estudiantes en la clase. Los que están delante son nuevos.
There are many students in the class. The ones in the front are new.

nuevos (adj) means 'new'

Hay muchasflores en el jardín. Las que están floreciendo son tulipanes.
There are many flowers in the garden. The ones that are blooming are tulips.

flores (f, pl) means 'flowers'

tulipanes (m, pl) means 'tulips'

Hay cuatro plantas en la sala. La que está junto a la ventana es una orquídea.
There are four plants in the living room. The one by the window is an orchid.

plantas (f, pl) means 'plants'

orquídea (f) means 'orchid'

Hay dos puertas en la casa. La que es roja es la entrada principal.
There are two doors in the house. The one that is red is the main entrance.

puertas (f, pl) means 'doors'

entrada (f) means 'entrance'

principal (adj) means 'main'

Hay dos perros en el parque. El que está jugando es mío.
There are two dogs in the park. The one that is playing is mine.

perros (m, pl) means 'dogs'
