Spanish grammar - -ER verbs like comer - 'to eat'

-ER verbs like comer - 'to eat'

The verb comer ('to eat') is what is called an -ER type verb.

-- There are several groupings of Spanish verbs that depend on The ending of The infinitive form. And that determines how they conjugate.

Most -ER type verbs conjugate in the same way. They drop the -er ending and add the following endings in the present tense:

• For yo: drop the -er and add -o so comeryo como

• For : drop the -er and add -es so comertú comes

• For él, ella, usted: drop the -er and add -e so comerél come etc.

• For nosotros, nosotras: drop the -er and add -emos so comernosotros comemos etc.

• For vosotros, vosotras: drop the -er and add -éis so comervosotros coméis etc.

• For ellos, ellas, ustedes: drop the -er and add -en so comerellos comen etc.

Beware that there are several very common -ER that conjugate irregularly. These include: hacer - 'to do, to make', tener - 'to have', poner - 'to put', ver - 'to see', saber - 'to know' and entender - 'to understand'.
