Spanish grammar - -AR verbs like hablar - 'to speak'

The verb hablar ('to speak') is what is called an -AR type verb.

Most -AR type verbs conjugate in the same way. They drop the -ar ending and add the following endings:

• For yo: drop the -ar and add -o so hablar ⇒ yo hablo

• For tú: drop the -ar and add -as so hablar ⇒ tú hablas

• For él, ella, usted: drop the -ar and add -a so hablar ⇒ él habla etc.

• For nosotros, nosotras: drop the -ar and add -amos so hablar ⇒ nosotros hablamos etc.

• For vosotros, vosotras: drop the -ar and add -áis so hablar ⇒ vosotros habláis etc.

• For ellos, ellas, ustedes: drop the -ar and add -an so hablar ⇒ ellos hablan etc.

Beware that there are several very common -AR verbs that conjugate irregularly. These include: dar - 'to give', estar - 'to be' (as we have seen), jugar - 'to play' and empezar - 'to begin, to start'.
