The same thing - тот же

The phrase тот же means 'the same' object.

It is not used when comparing two or more similar but distinct objects.

-- The тот declines like the article тот (that).

• Nominative: тот (masc.), то (neu.), та (fem.), те (plural)

• Prepositional: том (masc.), том (neu.), той (fem.), тех (plural)

• Accusative animate: того (masc. animate), тот (masc. inanimate), то (neu.), ту (fem.), тех (plural animate), те (plural inanimate)

• Genitive: того (masc.), того (neu.), той (fem.), тех (plural)

The adjective самый (same) is often added for emphasis.

The phrase один и тот же is often used and require the correct declension of один. We cover this in a later topic.

Examples:
	Вчера та же самая птица была на том дереве. Yesterday the same bird was in that tree. тот же (nominative fem.) ⇒ та же (самая)
	Я слышу те же звуки, что и вы. I hear the same sounds as you (formal). тот же (nominative plural) ⇒ те же
	Это та же красная звезда, которую мы видели прошлой ночью. This is the same red star we saw last night. тот же (nominative fem.) ⇒ та же
	Это та же самая дорога, по которой мы шли вчера. This is the same road we walked yesterday. тот же (nominative fem.) ⇒ та же (самая)
	Это тот же самый путь, о котором говорила Ольга. This is the same path that Olga spoke about. тот же (nominative masc.) ⇒ тот же (самый)

	Он живёт в том же городе, что и мои друзья. He lives in the same city as my friends. тот же (prepositional masc.) ⇒ (в) том же
	Они говорят о тех же девушках, что и мы. They talk about the same girls as us. тот же (prepositional plural) ⇒ (о) тех же
	Они всегда говорят о тех же предметах. They always talk about the same subjects. тот же (prepositional plural) ⇒ (о) тех же
	Я делаю те же ошибки. I make the same mistakes. тот же (accusative plural) ⇒ те же
	Вчера я снова видел того же человека. Yesterday I (male) again saw the same person. тот же (accusative masc.) ⇒ того же
