Another use of the genitive related to possession is to express a relation between things, or to express that something is part of a whole - in the same way that 'of' is used in English |

Киев — столица Украины.
Kiev is the capital of Ukraine (Ukraine's capital).

St. Petersburg was once the capital of Russia (Russia's capital).

Они были на рынке в центре города.
They were at the market in the centre of the city (city's centre).

Он президент республики.
He is the President of the Republic.

At the top of the hill.

There is a hole in the middle of the bagel.
