The Dative Case

The dative case of a noun denotes the person or object towards whom or which the action is directed.

The dative case answers the questions кому? (to whom?) and чему? (to what?).

The singular conjugations are as follows:

• Masc. consonant ending - add «-у».

• Masc. «-й» or «-ь» ending - replace with «-ю»

• Masc. «--ий» ending - replace with «-ию»

• Neu. «-о» ending - replace with «-у»

• Neu. «-я» ending - replace with «-е»

• Neu. «--ие» ending - replace with «--ию»

• Fem. «-а» or «-я» ending - replace with «-е»

• Fem. «-b» ending - replace with «-и»

The verb давать/дать typically takes the dative.

Examples:
	Я даю деньги водителю. I am giving money to the driver. водитель (masc.: -ь → -ю) ⇒ водителю
	Мы дали яблоко учителю. We gave an apple to the teacher. учитель (masc.: -ь → -ю) ⇒ учителю
	Он давал Ольге советы. He was giving Olga advice. Ольга (fem.: -а → -е) ⇒ Ольге
	Кому вы хотели подарить книгу? To whom did you (formal) want to give the book? кто ⇒ кому кому (to whom) is the dative form of кто
	Родители дарят Сергею новую машину. (His) parents are giving a new car to Sergei. Сергей (masc.: й + -ю) ⇒ Сергею
	Почему вы дали человеку взятку? Why did you (formal) give the man a bribe? человек (masc.: consonant + -у) ⇒ человеку
	Мы подарили Тане розовый велосипед. We gave Tanya a pink bicycle. Таня (fem.: -я → -е) ⇒ Тане
	Дали конфету девочке. (They/we/you) gave the candy to the girl. девочка (fem.: -а → -е) ⇒ девочке Noted the dropped pronoun - the subject comes from context and the conjugated дали.
	Ты отдал его старику? Did you (informal) (male) give it to the old man? старик (masc.: consonant + -у) ⇒ старику
	Она хотела давать цветок президенту. She wanted to give a flower to the president. президент (masc.: consonant + -у) ⇒ президенту
	Он оказывает дяде много помощи. He is giving (our) uncle lots of help. дядя (masc. but conjugate as fem.: -я → -е) ⇒ дяде оказывать / оказать means 'to give' or 'to provide'
	Почему ты ничего не подарил невесте? Why didn't you (informal) (male) give anything to the bride? невеста (fem.: -а → -е) ⇒ невесте дарить / подарить means 'to give' or 'to offer'
	Вы дали студенту всего одну минуту. You (formal) gave the (male) student just one minute. студент (masc.: consonant + -у) ⇒ студенту
	Но вы даете студентке две минуты. But you (formal) are giving the (female) student two minutes. студентка (fem.: -а → -е) ⇒ студентке
	Не давайте дураку ничего. Don't give (formal) the fool anything. дурак (masc.: consonant + -у) ⇒ дураку
	Они дали собаке кость. They gave the dog a bone. собака (fem.: -а → -е) ⇒ собаке
	Они дали лошади траву. They gave the horse grass. лошадь (fem.: -ь → -и) ⇒ лошади
	И они дают коту рыбу. And they are giving the cat a fish. кот (masc.: consonant + -у) ⇒ коту
