Russian grammar - The Accusative Case - Singular |
The accusative case is used for the (direct) object of the verb - the thing in the sentence that is receiving the action. Verbs that take the direct object in the accusative case include смотреть (to look, to watch), видеть (to see), делать (to do) and писать (to write) For masculine nouns, in addition to gender and number, the accusative conjugation also depends on whether the noun is animate (person or animal), or inanimate (object or concept). • For animate masculine nouns, add an «-а» if it ends in a consonant; and if the ending is «-ь» replace it with «-я». • inanimate masculine nouns are unchanged in the accusative. • For feminine nouns «-а» changes to «-у», and «-я» changes to «-ю». • All other singular accusative nouns are unchanged including all neuter nouns. Some examples here use the verb смотреть на which means 'to look at' which also takes the direct object in the accusative case. |
