Prepositions that take the Genitive

We have already seen that the proposition y (near, by) takes the genitive.

There are many other important prepositions that take the genitive. Here are some of the most common ones:

около - near, around, about

возле - beside, by, next to, near

у - by, near, at & at the home of

напротив - across from, opposite

Дарья живёт напротив Наташи.
Darya lives across from Natasha.

Наташа (fem. singular) (близ) Наташи (genitive)

Я стою около мамы.
I am standing close to (my) mother.

мама (fem. singular) (около) мамы (genitive)

Omitting the possessive pronoun implies it is one's own mother.

Около завода есть много кафе.
There are many cafes near the factory.

завод (masc. singular) (около) завода (genitive, 'near the factory')

кафе is also the plural - often the case with loan words.

Ваня всегда около меня.
Vanya always is near me.

я (около) меня (genitive, 'near me' or 'around me')

Припаркуйся где-нибудь около дома.
Park somewhere around the house.

дом (masc. singular) (около) дома (genitive, 'around the house')

Я был возле нашей квартиры.
I was next to our apartment.

наша квартира (fem. singular) (возле) нашей квартиры (genitive)

Возле реки есть мельница.
By the river there is a mill.

река (fem. singular) (возле) реки (genitive)

Дарья живёт возле нас.
Darya lives next to us.

мы (plural) (возле) нас (genitive)

Боря играет возле нашего дома.
Borya is playing beside our house.

наш дом (masc. singular) (возле) нашего дома (genitive)

Чемодан стоит возле двери.
The suitcase is near the door.

дверь (fem. singular) (возле) двери (genitive)

Студенты стоят у экрана.
The students are standing by/near the screen.

У дома врача стоит новая машина.
There is a new car at the doctor’s house.

Когда мы были у бабушки, мы ели кашу.
When we were at grandma's we ate porridge.

бабушка (fem. singular) (у) бабушки (genitive)

Бабушка стоит у окна.
Grandma stands by the window.

окно (neut. singular) (у) окна (genitive)

Напротив университета есть книжный магазин.
Opposite the university there is a bookstore.

университета (masc. singular) университета (genitive, 'opposite the university')

Он сидел прямо напротив неё.
He sat right across from (in front of) her.
