Russian grammar - Plurals - exceptions and irregulars |
• Exceptions: There is one major exception to the rules for forming plurals from the previous topic. For nouns that would normally take an «-ы» to form the plural, after г, к, х, ж, ч, ш, and щ we need use «-и» instead. This makes pronunciation easier. • There are many irregular plurals - indeed many common Russian nouns have irregular plural forms. - There are many masculine words that form the plural with an «-а» ending. - And some words have completely different words for the plural. • Loan words: many foreign loan words have no plural form. These are all such common words that it is well worth memorising their plural forms. |
