Numbers and the Genitive Case

In Russian counting objects take specific grammatical cases depending on the number:

• One (1): the object takes the nominative

• 2, 3 and 4: the object takes the genitive singular

• Numbers ending in 2, 3 and 4 (22, 103 etc.): also take the genitive singular: EXCEPT 12, 13, and 14.

• All other numbers (including 12, 13, and 14): take the genitive plural.

In these examples the numbers are all in the nominative case. In a later topic we will see how the numbers decline according to case.

Also recall that the question сколько? (how many?, how much?) takes the genitive plural.

Examples:
	Сколько человек в автобусе? How many people are on the bus? человек (masc. singular) ⇒ (сколько) человек (plural gentive, irregular) людей or человек are both used as the genitive plural
	В автобусе всего один человек. There is just one person on the bus. человек (masc. singular) ⇒ (один) человек (nominative)
	Ранее в автобусе было два человека. Previously there were two people on the bus. человек (masc. singular) ⇒ (два) человека (genitive singular)
	Сколько денег у неё в кошельке? How much money does she have in her purse? деньги (invariant plural) ⇒ (сколько) денег (irregular plural gentive)
	У неё в кошельке один рубль. She has one ruble in her purse. рубль (masc. singular) ⇒ (один) рубль (nominative singular)
	У неё в кошельке было два рубля. She had two rubles in her purse. рубль (masc. singular) ⇒ (два) рубля (genitive singular)
	И вот у неё в кошельке пять рублей. And now she has five rubles in his purse. рубль (masc. singular) ⇒ (пять) рублей (genitive plural)
	Сколько цветов в этом букете? How many flowers are there in that bouquet? цветок (masc. singular) ⇒ (сколько) цветов (irregular genitive plural)
	В букете двенадцать цветов. There are twelve flowers in the bouquet. цветок (masc. singular) ⇒ (двенадцать) цветов (irregular genitive plural)
	Сколько раз вы были во Франции? How many times have you (formal) to France? раз (masc. singular) ⇒ (сколько) раз (irregular gentive plural)
	Я был во Франции пять раз - в прошлом году два раза. I (male) have been to France five times - last year two times. раз (masc. singular) ⇒ (пять) раз (irregular genitive plural) and два раза (genitive singular)
	Сколько часов ты вчера была в библиотеке? How many hours were you (informal) (female) in the library yesterday? час (masc. singular) ⇒ (сколько) часов (genitive plural)
	Я был там три часа. I (male) was there for three hours. час (masc. singular) ⇒ (три) часа (genitive singular)
	Позавчера я была там всего один час. The day before yesterday I (female) was there for just one hour. час (masc. singular) ⇒ (один) час (nominative singular)
	На её дне рождения было двадцать два гостя. At her birthday (party) there were twenty-two guests. гость (masc. singular) ⇒ (два) гостя (genitive singular)
	От моего дома до школы пять минут. From my home to school is five minutes. минута (fem. singular) ⇒ (пять) минут (genitive plural)
	Но от вашего дома до школы всего две минуты. But from your (formal) home to school is just two minutes. минута (fem. singular) ⇒ (две) минуты (genitive singular)
