To see - the verb voir

The verb voir means 'to see'.

It is a very common but irregular -IR verb. Its conjugations should be memorized.

Its present tense conjugations are as follows:

• je vois - 'I see'

• tu vois - 'you (familiar) see'

• il & elle voit - 'he/she sees'

• nous voyons - 'we see'

• vous voyez - 'you (plural) see' & 'you (formal) see'

• ils & elles voient - 'they see'

The verb voir can also mean 'to understand' just like 'to see' can in English.

Note that also like in English there is a distinction in French between voir ('to see') and regarder ('to look' or 'to watch').

	je vois I see
	tu vois you (familiar) see
	il voit he sees
	elle ne voit pas she does not see
	nous voyons we see
	vous voyez you (formal) see
	ils ne voient pas they (males) do not see / they are not seeing
	elles voient they (females) see / they are seeing
	Je vois un tigre là-bas. I see a tiger over there.
	Je vois deux personnes au loin. I am seeing two people in the distance. au loin means 'in the distance'
	Est-ce que tu vois les clés ? Do you (familiar) see the keys?
	Voyez-vous la différence ? Do you (formal) see the difference? différence (f) means 'difference'
	Avec ces lunettes, elle voit clairement maintenant. With these glasses, she sees clearly now. clairement means 'clearly'
	aujourd'hui, nous voyons très bien le mont Blanc. Today, we can see Mont Blanc very well.
	Qu'est-ce qu'il voit dans ce trou ? What does he see in this hole?
	Est-ce que vous voyez le navire à l'horizon ? Do you (formal) see the ship on the horizon? navire (m) means 'ship' horizon (m) means 'horizon'
	Ah oui, je vois maintenant. Ah yes, I see (understand) now.
	Je vois maintenant pourquoi vous voulez une réponse immédiatement. I see (understand) now why you (formal) want an answer immediately. immédiatement means 'immediately'
	Nous voyons des étoiles brillantes avec le télescope. We see bright stars with the telescope. étoile (f) means 'star' brillant (m) means 'bright' télescope (m) means 'telescope'
	Je ne vois pas ce que tu vois. I don't see what you (familiar) see.
