There is not - il n'y a pas

The pattern il y a.. ('there is' or 'there are') is negated as il n'y a pas.. ('this is not' or 'there are not').

It is very common to see the negative partitive pas de used in this context - that is il n'y a pas de.. - 'there is not any' OR 'there are not any..'

Examples:
	Est-ce qu'il y a du riz ? Non, il n'y a pas de riz. Is there rice? No, there is no rice. du riz ⇒ de riz in the negative
	Il n'y a pas de confiture sur ma tartine. There's no jam on my toast. confiture (f) means 'jam' tartine (f) means 'slice of bread' (often a slice from a baguette)
	Il n'y a pas de chiens dans ce parc. There are no dogs in this park.
	Il n'y a pas d'oiseaux dans la forêt. There are no birds in the forest.
	Pourquoi n'y a-t-il pas de piles dans cette torche ? Why aren't there any batteries in this torch? pile (f) means 'battery' torche (f) means 'torch'
	Il n'y a pas de nuages dans le ciel. There are no clouds in the sky.
	Il n'y a pas de dessin sur ta chemise. There is no drawing on your (familiar) shirt. dessin (f) means 'drawing' or 'design'
	Dans la vitrine, il n'y a pas de gâteaux qui sont très beaux. In the shop window there are no cakes which are very beautiful.
	N'y a-t-il pas de lettres dans la boîte à lettres ? Aren't there any letters in the mailbox? la boîte à lettres means 'mailbox'
	Est-ce qu'il n'y a pas au moins un médecin ici ? Isn't there at least one doctor here? au moins means 'at least' Instead of the partitive de the indefinite article un is used to emphasize at least one.
	Pas de problème ! No problem! A contraction of Il n'y a pas de problème !
	Pas de problème sur la route ? No problem on the road? The il n'y a can be (and commonly is) omitted.
