The subjunctive with negated verbs expressing doubt or uncertainty

The subjunctive is used after the negative form of verbs that express doubt or uncertainty.

This includes subjunctive conjunctions like (but not limited to):

• ne pas penser que - 'to not think that'

• ne pas croire que - 'to not believe that'

• ne pas être sûr que - 'to not believe that'

• ne pas être convaincu que - 'to not be convinced that'

• ne pas être persuadé que - 'to not be persuaded that'

• ne pas prétendre que - 'to not claim that'

It is however possible (especially in written French) to use the indicative mood in these types of phrases if the speaker wants to emphasize that he/she is certain about some action or outcome.

Examples:
	Je ne pense pas qu'il revienne. I don't think he's coming back.
	Je ne pense pas qu'ils soient encore prêts. I don't think they are ready yet.
	Je pense qu'il viendra, mais je ne pense pas qu'elle vienne. I think he will come but I don't think she will.
	Il était malade donc je ne pense pas qu'il soit allé à l'opéra hier soir. He was sick so I don't think he went to the opera last night.
	Elle ne croit pas qu'il veuille nous inviter. She doesn't think he wants to invite us.
	Je ne suis pas sûr qu'ils viennent. I'm not sure they're coming.
	Je ne suis pas sûr que tout le monde comprenne que les avalanches sont dangereuses. I'm not sure everyone understands that avalanches are dangerous.
	Nous ne sommes pas convaincus qu'il ait la bonne solution. We are not convinced that he has the right solution.
	Je ne suis pas convaincu que le gouvernement puisse réduire le chômage. I am not convinced that the government can reduce unemployment.
	Je ne suis pas convaincu que ce ne soit pas possible. I'm not convinced it's not possible.
	Je ne suis pas persuadé que ce soit le cas. I am not convinced that is the case.
	Je ne prétends pas que ce soit comme ça partout en France. I do not claim that it is like that everywhere in France.
	Je ne prétends pas que cette option soit parfaite. I don't claim that this option is perfect.
