The pronoun en

The pronoun en is used to replace either a quantity or the object of a verb that takes the preposition de.

-- The best equivalent in English is 'of it' or 'of them'.

The quality can one referred to using partitive like de, du, de la, des. Or a number. Or a fraction like un quart. Or an adverb of quantity like beaucoup de or un peu de. Or a measurement of quantity like un kilo de, duex litres de or une boîte de.

In French we do NOT say j'ai acheté 5 litres - the 5 litres is considered an adjective and it needs a noun/pronoun. We can use en for this. So we say j'en ai acheté 5 litres ('I bought 5 litres of it').

-- Likewise we do NOT ask avez-vous un ? - we need a noun or pronoun. So instead we say en avez-vous un ? meaning 'have you got one (of them)'

The pronoun en can also be used to replace the object of verbs that take the preposition de.

-- When that verb couples with an auxiliary (as in le passé composé) the en should come before the auxiliary.

But when the de refers to a person en can't be used - instead a stressed pronoun (moi, toi…) must be used.

Examples:
	Voulez-vous de l'eau ? Oui, s'il vous plaît, j'en veux. Do you (formal) want some water? Yes please, I want some. de l'eau ⇒ en
	Voulez-vous de la salade ? Oui, j'en veux, merci. Do you (formal) want some salad? Yes, I do want some, thanks. de la salade ⇒ en
	Vous voulez six pommes, n'est-ce pas ? Oui, j'en veux six. You (formal) want six apples, right? Yes, I want six (of them). trois unités de pommes ⇒ en Can NOT say Oui, je veux six.'
