Subjunctive conjunctions with and without the ne explétif

This topic introduces four more conjunctions that may or may not require the ne explétif.

These first three all requires the ne explétif:

• à moins que - 'unless'

• éviter que - 'avoid that'

• empêcher que - 'prevent that'

And sans que ('without (doing)') typically does not take the ne explétif unless the main verb is negated and then still only optional.

Examples:
	Je n'irai pas, à moins que vous ne veniez. I won't go unless you (formal) come.
	Quitte-la, à moins que tu l'aimes toujours. Leave her, unless you (familiar) still love her.
	Je te fais confiance, à moins que tu ne me mentes. I trust you unless you (familiar) lie to me.
	Évitons que la situation ne dégénère ! Let's prevent the situation from degenerating!
	Évitez qu'il ne vous voie. Avoid that he sees you (formal).
	Elle empêche que la porte ne se ferme. She prevents the door from closing.
	Il veut éviter que cela n'arrive. He wants to prevent that from happening.
	Il porte un masque afin d'empêcher qu'il soit reconnu. He wears a mask to prevent him from being recognized.
	Notre priorité est d'empêcher que la rivière ne déborde. Our priority is to prevent the river flooding. déborder(verb) means 'to flood' or 'to overflow'
	J'ai réussi sans qu'ils le veuillent. I succeeded without them wanting it.
	Ça fait une journée sans qu'il ait mangé. It has been one day without him having eaten.
	Il est venu sans que nous le sachions. He came without us knowing (it).
	Elle ne viendra pas sans qu'on ne l'invite. She won't come unless we invite her. The ne explétif can optionally be included since the venir in the main clause is negated
