There are three irregular present participles that are very widely used and should be memorized. The three irregular gerunds are: • avoir ⇒ ayant • être ⇒ étant • savoir ⇒ sachant The gerunds ayant and étant can also be used as auxiliary verbs when formulating complex gerunds especially from the passé composé. |

Having finished, I (female) left. |

Je le crois maintenant, ayant entendu sa version de l'histoire.
I (male) believe him now, having heard his version of the story. |

Sachant le danger, je n'y suis pas allé.
Knowing the danger, I (male) did not go there. |
|
|
Ayant faim, il a mangé tout le gâteau.
Being hungry, he ate all the cake. |

|
Ayant fini mon travail, je me suis détendue.
Having finished my work, I relaxed.

|
Sachant ce que nous savons, nous ne sommes pas allés plus loin.
Knowing what we know, we went no further. |

Les abréviations présentent l'avantage de ne pas toujours avoir besoin de prononcer un long mot tout en sachant de quoi il s'agit.
Abbreviations have the advantage of not always having to pronounce a long word while knowing what it is. |

Ayant déjà mangé, nous n'avons rien commandé.
Having already eaten, we didn't order anything. |

Étant parti de bonne heure, il est arrivé à l'heure.
Having left early, he arrived on time. |
