In addition to present participles modifying verbs like adverbs, present participles in French can also modify nouns, like adjectives. In this mode the present participle effectively replaces the relative clause that begins with que ('that') or qui ('who'). |

I see people carrying bags. |

Les chiens aboyant doivent rester dehors.
Barking dogs should stay outside. |

Il y a une pénurie de médecins parlant français.
There is a shortage of French-speaking doctors. |
