Passive voice

The passive voice inverts the verb so that rather than 'He did it' we can say 'It was done by him'.

Or simply 'It was done' thereby removing the subject completely.

• In the present tense this is achieved by using the verb être and the verb past participle - just like using the past participle as an adjective.

• In the passé composé we use avoir été ('has been' or 'was') and the past participle.

The AGENT who does the verb can (optionally) be specified:

• For active verbs use par.

• For state-of-being or emotion verbs use de.

Note that while the passive voice can be useful to either emphasize the subject or make the subject anonymous, it tends to be avoided. There are other ways to do this in French.

-- We can emphasize the subject by using subject repetition: 'c'est..qui'.

-- Use the pronoun 'on' to make the subject anonymous.

-- Use reflexive verbs to make the subject anonymous.

Examples:
	Le gâteau a été mangé. The cake has been eaten. manger ⇒ (m.sing) mangé
	Le gâteau a été mangé par les enfants. The cake was eaten by the children. manger ⇒ (m.sing) mangé manger is an action verb so use par for agent.
	Le gâteau a été mangé par qui ? The cake was eaten by whom? manger ⇒ (m.sing) mangé
	Par qui le gâteau a-t-il été mangé ? By whom was the cake eaten? manger ⇒ (m.sing) mangé
	Le brocoli n'a pas été mangé. The broccoli was not eaten. manger ⇒ (m.sing) mangé
	Pourquoi le brocoli n'a-t-il pas été mangé ? Why wasn't the broccoli eaten? manger ⇒ (m.sing) mangé
	Mes devoirs ont été mangés par le chien. My homework was eaten by the dog. manger ⇒ (m.pl) mangés
	Tes devoirs ont-ils vraiment été mangés par le chien ? Was your (familiar) homework really eaten by the dog? manger ⇒ (m.pl) mangés
	Il n'a pas été cru par son professeur. He was not believed by his teacher. croire ⇒ (m.sing) cru
	Le traité a été rompu par les deux parties. The treaty was broken by both parties. rompre ⇒ (m.sing) rompu
	Votre objection a été notée par le comité. Your (formal) (female) objection has been noted by the committee. noter ⇒ (f.sing) notée
	Ce film a été tourné à Montmartre par un réalisateur très connu. This film was shot in Montmartre by a well-known director. tourner ⇒ (m.sing) tourné réalisateur (m) means 'director' (theatre or movies)
	L'ambulance a été appelée par des passants. The ambulance was called by passers-by. appeler ⇒ (f.sing) appelée
	Le blessé est conduit à l'hôpital par l'ambulance. The injured person was taken to the hospital by the ambulance. conduire ⇒ (m.sing) conduit
	La voiture n'a pas pu être vendue. The car could not be sold. vendre ⇒ (f.sing) vendue
	Le voleur n'a pas été arrêté par le policier. The thief was not caught by the policeman. attraper ⇒ (m.sing) attrapé
	L'ours est suivi de ses oursons. The bear is followed by its cubs. suivre ⇒ (m.sing) suivi suivre is an state verb so use de for agent suivre (verb) means 'to follow'
	Ils sont admirés de tout le monde. They are admired by everyone. admirer ⇒ (m.pl) admirés admirer is an emotion verb so use de for agent
	Le patron est détesté de ses collègues. The boss is hated by his colleagues. détester ⇒ (m.sing) détesté détester is an emotion verb so use de for agent
	Elle est respectée de tous ses collègues. She is respected by all her colleagues. respecter ⇒ (f.sing) respectée respecter is an emotion verb so use de for agent
	Ces mots sont vraiment appréciés de tout le monde. These words are really appreciated by everyone. apprécier ⇒ (m.pl) appréciés apprécier is an emotion verb so use de for agent
	La voleuse a été connue de tous. The (female) thief was known to everyone. connaître ⇒ (f.sing) connue connaître is an state verb so use de for agent
	Nous avons été accompagnées de nos amis. We (females) were accompanied by our friends. accompagner ⇒ (f.pl) accompagnées accompagner is an state verb so use de for agent
	La terre a été couverte de neige. The land was covered with snow. couvrir ⇒ (f.sing) couverte couvrir is an state verb so use de for agent
	Je n'ai jamais été battue aux échecs. I (female) have never been beaten at chess. battre ⇒ (f.sing) battue
	La pasteurisation a été inventée par Louis Pasteur. Pasteurization was invented by Louis Pasteur. inventer ⇒ (f.sing) inventée
	Le feu a été découvert, pas inventé. Fire was discovered, not invented. découvrir ⇒ (m.sing) découvert
