Irregular Adjectives

There are several very common French adjectives that are irregular and should just be memorized.

This topics' examples illustrate the following important but irregular adjectives.

vieux (m) vieille (f) - 'old'

beau (m) belle (f) 'handsome' or 'beautiful'

nouveau (m) nouvelle (f) 'new'

faux (m) fausse (f) 'false'

doux (m) douce (f) 'sweet' (including figuratively)

fou (m) folle (f) 'crazy'

long (m) longue (f) 'long'

frais (m) fraîche (f) 'fresh'

gentil (m) gentille (f) 'kind'

nul (m) nulle (f) (slang) 'rubbish' or 'not good'

sec (m) sèche (f) 'dry'

favori (m) favorite (f) 'favorite'

Examples:
La boutique n'est pas vieille mais le quartier est très vieux.
The shop is not old but the neighborhood is very old.

vieux (m) vieille (f)

quartier (f) means 'neighborhood' or 'area'

Tu viens d'une très belle ville.
You come from a very nice town.

beau (m) belle (f)

ville (f) means 'town' or 'city'

En plus, là-bas, le temps est toujours très beau.
In addition, there, the weather is always very beautiful.

temps means 'the weather' or 'time'

en plus means 'in addition' or 'more'

Le nouveau président a-t-il une nouvelle stratégie ?
Does the new president have a new strategy?

nouveau (m) nouvelle (f)

stratégie (f) means 'strategy'

Le résultat est clairement faux.
The result is clearly wrong.

résultat (m) means 'result' or 'outcome'

La rumeur d'une guerre est-elle fausse ?
Is the rumor of a war false?

faux (m) fausse (f)

rumeur (f) means 'rumour'

Il y a une bouteille de cidre doux dans le frigo.
There's a bottle of sweet cider in the fridge.

cidre (m) means 'cider'

frigo (m.slang) means 'fridge'

C'est une petite fille très douce.
She is a very sweet girl.

doux (m) douce (f)

Note that ce can be used as a pronoun ('he' or 'she') to directly refer to people

Je ne suis pas fou. Et elle non plus n'est pas folle.
I am not crazy. And neither is she crazy.

fou (m) folle (f)

non plus (adv) means 'neither' or 'also'

Le livre n'est pas long mais la pièce est très longue.
The book is not long but the play is very long.

long (m) longue (f)

La pomme verte est fraîche mais l'avocat n'est pas frais.
The green apple is fresh but the avocado is not fresh.

frais (m) fraîche (f)

Le professeur n'est pas gentil mais la directrice est très gentille.
The professor is not nice but the director is very nice.

gentil (m) gentille (f)

gentil (m) means 'kind' or 'nice'

Le livre est nul et la pièce est aussi nulle.
The book sucks and the play sucks too.

nul (m) nulle (f)

nul (m) means 'rubbish' or 'useless' or 'bad'

Est-ce que le jean est sec ?
Are the jeans dry?

jean (m) means 'jeans'

La chemise est déjà sèche.
The shirt is already dry.

sec (m) sèche (f)

C'est le plat favori de la famille.
It's the family's favorite dish.

famille (f) means 'family'

C'est la musique favorite de Sonia.
It's Sonia's favorite music.
