In the style of or in the manner of - à la

The term à la is used to describe something that is 'in the style of' or 'in the manner of' something else.

It is an abbreviation of à la mode de ('in the fashion of') or à la manière de ('in the manner of').

While there are many fixed expressions that use à la in this way, it can be used with any feminine singular adjective or a proper noun (someone's or something's name).

Examples:
	J'aime flâner dans les jardins à la française de Paris. I love to stroll through the French-style gardens of Paris. flâner (verb) means 'to stroll'
	C'est une manifestation du socialisme à la française ! It is a manifestation of French-style socialism!

	Les œufs à la diable sont un favori de la famille. Deviled Eggs are a family favorite. diable (m) means 'devil'
	C'est sa première sculpture à la cubiste. This is his first cubist sculpture.
	Il y a beaucoup d'auteurs qui ont essayé d'écrire à la manière de Jean_Paul Sartre. There are many authors who have tried to write in the manner of Jean-Paul Sartre.
	La réunion avait été organisée par lui et il l'a fait à la hussarde. The meeting had been organized by him and he did it like a hussar. à la hussarde means 'in a rough manner' hussarde (m) means 'a soldier in a light cavalry regiment
	Les petits-déjeuners sont tous fraîchement préparés à la commande. Breakfasts are all freshly made to order. à la commande means 'as per ordered'
