French grammar - Direct and indirect speech - il dit que… |

|
|||
Indirect (or reported) speech is when someone reports what has been said. Like in English we can simply put the verbatim phrase in inverted commas (called les guillemets in French). This is referred to a 'direct speech'. Alternatively, we can report the speech as a subordinate clause using dire que etc. If the 'reporting' verb (eg. Il dit: « ») is in le present, the tense in the subordinate clause in indirect speech remains unchanged. However for any other tenses there need to be agreement. The rules are as follows: • (direct) present tense ⇒ (indirect) present tense • (direct) passé composé ⇒ (indirect) plus que parfait • (direct) futur simple ⇒ (indirect) conditionnel present This very similar to what is done in English. Additionally, regardless of the reporting tense: • (direct) imperative ⇒ (indirect) infinitive |
