Chinese grammar - To want - 要 (yào)

To want - 要 (yào)

The Chinese verb (yào) means 'to want'.

It can take both a noun object and a verb.

So we can use it to say 'I want [something]'

As well as with a verb: 'I want [to do something]'

Note that this is quite a direct way to ask for something and can be impolite.

Indeed (yào) also means 'to need' or can express the future tense ('going to') which we will see in a later topic.
