Would like to - 想 (xiǎng)

The verb (xiǎng) means 'would like to'.

It needs to be followed with a verb - as in 'I would like to [do something]'.

When coupled with (yào), it means 'to want to have' and in this form can be used to refer to a noun.

- 想要 ('I would like to have...') is a more polite way to ask for something than just plain .

Examples:
我想要一杯咖啡。
wǒ xiǎng yào yì bēi kāfēi.
I would like (to have) a cup of coffee.
她想要那本书。
tā xiǎng yào nà běn shū.
She would like (to have) that book.
你想要什么?
nǐ xiǎng yào shénme?

他想要一个苹果。
tā xiǎng yào yí gè píngguǒ.
He would like (to have) an apple.
我想喝水。
wǒ xiǎng hē shuǐ.

她想吃苹果。

晚饭 (wǎnfàn) means 'dinner'

我想学数学。
wǒ xiǎng xué shùxué.
I would like to study mathematics.

数学 (shùxué) means 'mathematics'
