The Days of the Week - ¿Qué día es hoy?

Talking about days of the week in Spanish has some nuances.

• Asking about the day of the week we can say 'What day is today?' - ¿Qué día es hoy?

• All the days of the week are masculine.

• To say 'on' a particular day just the definite article (el) is required - no preposition is needed.

-- NOT en sábado, NOT a sábado, NOT al sábado - just el sábado.

• To say 'every' some-day-of-the-week, we use the plural and the plural definite article (los).

• The days of the week are not capitalized in Spanish.

• The Spanish week starts on Monday.

los días de la semana means 'the days of the week' - all seven days.

los días laborables and entre semana mean 'weekdays' - Mon-day to Friday.

el fin de semana means 'the weekend'. With the article el it means 'every weekend'.

Examples:
¿Qué día es? Es lunes.
What day is it? It's Monday.

lunes (m) means 'Monday'

¿Qué día es? Es martes.
What day is it? It is Tuesday.

martes (m) means 'Tuesday'

¿Qué día es hoy? Hoy es miércoles.
What day is it today? Today is Wednesday.

miércoles (m) means 'Wednesday'

¿Qué día llegas (tú)?
What day are (you, familiar) arriving?
Llego el jueves.
(I) arrive on Thursday.

jueves (m) means 'Thursday'

La reunión es el viernes.
The meeting is Friday.

viernes (m) means 'Friday'

La fiesta es este sábado.
The party is this Saturday.

sábado (m) means 'Saturday'

¿Qué días de la semana trabajas (tú)?
What days of the week do (you, familiar) work?
No trabajo este miércoles.
(I) don't work this Wednesday.
Normalmente no trabajo los miércoles.
(I) normally don't work on Wednesdays.
Odio los lunes.
(I) hate Mondays.

odiar means 'to hate'

Los viernes son mi día favorito de la semana.
Fridays are my favorite day of the week.

favorito (adj.) means 'favorite'

Comemos bagels para el desayuno los sábados.
(We) eat bagels for breakfast on Saturdays.
Comemos bagels para el desayuno todos los sábados.
(We) eat bagels for breakfast every Saturday.
¿Entrenas todos los días de la semana?
Do (you, familiar) train every day of the week?

entrenar means 'to train'

La panadería está abierta todos los días de la semana excepto los domingos.
The bakery is open every day of the week except Sundays.

panadería (f) means 'bakery'

Solo cocinamos entre semana, los fines de semana comemos fuera.
(We) only cook on weekdays - on weekends (we) eat out.

entre semana means 'weekdays'

fines de semana means 'weekends'

fuera means 'out'

Este fin de semana fuimos a la playa.
This weekend (we) went to the beach.
Los fines de semana descansamos en casa.
On weekends (we) rest at home.
