'For how long?' & 'How long since?' - ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que...?

Asking 'how long something has been happening, or 'how long since something happened', both use the phrase ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que...?

In Spanish no distintion is made between actions that finished in the past, and actions that are ongoing in the present.

Both use ...hace que... and this distinction is made by the tense of the verb:

• Use the present tense when the action is ongoing.

• Use the preterite (past) tense when the action is completed.

To answer we use hace + [time duration] + que…

Examples:
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que vives aquí? How long have (you, familiar) been living here? vivir ⇒ (tú) vives (present tense)
	Hace cinco años que vivo aquí. (I) have been living here for five years. vivir ⇒ (yo) vivo (present tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que trabajas en esta empresa? How long have (you, familiar) been working at this company? trabajar ⇒ (tú) trabajas (present tense)
	Hace dos años que trabajo en esta empresa. (I) have been working at this company for two years. trabajar ⇒ (yo) trabajo (present tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español? How long have (you, familiar) been studying Spanish? estudiar ⇒ (tú) estudias (present tense)
	Hace tres años que estudio español. (I) have been studying Spanish for three years. estudiar ⇒ (yo) estudio (present tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que conociste a María? How long has it been since (you, familiar) met María? conocer ⇒ (tú) conociste (preterite tense) María is a proper noun
	Hace seis meses que conocí a María. (I) met María six months ago. conocer ⇒ (yo) conocí (preterite tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que te mudaste a esta ciudad? How long has it been since (you, familiar) moved to this city? mudarse ⇒ (tú) te mudaste (preterite tense)
	Hace un año que me mudé a esta ciudad. (I) moved to this city a year ago. mudarse ⇒ (yo) me mudé (preterite tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que terminaste el libro? How long has it been since (you, familiar) finished the book? terminar ⇒ (tú) terminaste (preterite tense)
	Hace dos semanas que terminé el libro. (I) finished the book two weeks ago. terminar ⇒ (yo) terminé (preterite tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que te fuiste de vacaciones? How long has it been since (you, familiar) went on vacation? irse ⇒ (tú) te fuiste (preterite tense)
	Hace un mes que me fui de vacaciones. (I) went on vacation a month ago. irse ⇒ (yo) me fui (preterite tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que empezaste a trabajar aquí? How long has it been since (you, familiar) started working here? empezar ⇒ (tú) empezaste (preterite tense)
	Hace un año que empecé a trabajar aquí. (I) started working here a year ago. empezar ⇒ (yo) empecé (preterite tense)
	¿Cuánto tiempo hace que juegas al fútbol? How long have (you, familiar) been playing soccer? jugar ⇒ (tú) juegas (present tense)
	Hace diez años que juego al fútbol. (I) have been playing soccer for ten years. jugar ⇒ (yo) juego (present tense)
