Whatever, whoever: бы + ни

The combination бы + ни is used to express indetermination (whatever, whoever, whenever, etc.).

-- Or 'no matter what', 'no matter who', 'no matter when' etc.

• The бы should immediately follows a question word (but is not attached to it, as in English);

• And the ни should directly precedes the verb.

Because the бы implies conditionality, the verb is typically in the past tense.

Examples:
	Что бы они ни говорили, я все равно это сделаю. No matter what they say, I will do it anyway.
	Куда бы она ни пошла, её собака следует за ней. Wherever she goes, her dog follows.
	Кто бы ни получил письмо, пожалуйста, оставьте его на столе. Whoever receives the letter, please leave it on the table.
	Какой бы карандаш она ни просила, я давал ей. Whatever pencil she asked for, I (male) gave to her.
	Как бы мы туда ни ехали, мы опоздаем. No matter how we travel there, we will be late.
	С кем бы мы ни говорили, мы ничего не могли узнать. Whomever we talked with, we could not learn (find out) anything.
	Как бы он ни старался, он не мог открыть бутылку. No matter how hard he tried, he could not open the bottle.
	Сколько бы я ни ела, я никогда не толстею. No matter how much I (female) eat, I never get fat.
	Какая бы сторона ни победила, я буду доволен. Whichever side wins, I shall be satisfied.
	Откуда бы я ни бросил мяч, я не могу попасть в цель. No matter from where I (male) throw the ball, I can't hit the target.
