To make, or to cause something to happen - 시키다

We previous used the verb 시키다 (to order) in reported speech.

But it can also be used with 하다 type verbs to express causation.

-- 시키다 is the causative form of 하다.

Used this way 시키다 replaces 하다 in 하다 type verbs.

-- So for example 공부하다 (to study) becomes 공부시키다 (to make someone study).

-- Or 공부를 시키다.

Note that 하다 verbs that have a polysyllabic stem, they can take 시키다.

-- For example, 변하다 (to change) is a verb but the stem 변 is monosyllabic, so 변시키다 is wrong, you must use 변하게 하다 (see previous topic).

Examples:
	아버지는 우리에게 매일 밤 공부를 시켰어요. (Our) father made us study every night. 공부하다 means 'to study' 공부시키다 means 'to make (someone) study'
	저는 열심히 일해서 부장님을 만족시켰어요. I worked hard and made (my) manager happy. 만족하다 means 'to feel satisfied' or 'to feel happy' 만족시키다 means 'to make (someone) happy'
	목이 아파니 저에게 노래시키지 마세요. Don't make me sing because my throat hurts. 노래하다 means 'to sing'
	아까 저에게 선생님이 창문을 청소를 시켰어요. Earlier, my teacher made me clean the windows. 청소하다 means 'to clean'
	매일 아침 수업 전에 선생님이 저에게 책상을 청소를 시켜요. Every morning before class, the teacher makes me clean (my) desk.
	이따가 아내가 저에게 청소를 시킬 거예요. Later, her wife will have me do the cleaning.
	제 친구가 한국어를 연습시켰어요. My friend made (me) practice Korean. 연습하다 means 'to practice'
	경찰이 차를 정지시켰어요. The police made the car stop. 정지하다 means 'to stop'
	의사가 민경이를 입원시켰어요. The doctor made MinKyung be admitted to hospital. 입원하다 means 'to be hospitalised' or 'to be admitted into hospital'
	여자친구를 감동시키는 가장 좋은 방법은 뭐에요? What's the best way to touch (your) girlfriend's heart? 감동 means 'sensation' or 'touching someone's heart'
	그 뉴스는 시민들을 흥분시켰어요. The news excited the citizens. 흥분 means 'excitement' 흥분하다 means 'to excite'
	그 뉴스는 사람들을 크게 흥분시키고 있어요. The news made the people to be greatly excited.
	한국은 캐나다를 상기시켜요. Korea reminds me of Canada. 상기하다 means 'to recall' or 'to remember' 상기시키다 means 'to be reminded of' or 'to cause someone to be reminded of something'
	그 남자는 저의 옛날 남자 친구를 상기시켜요. The guy reminds me of my ex-boyfriend.
	선생님은 학생들에게 숙제를 해야 하는 것을 상기시켰어요. The teacher reminded the students that (they) should do their homework.
	선생님은 학생들을 방과 후 수업 시간 동안 공부시켰어요. The teacher made the students study during the after school class.
	경찰관은 남자에게 음주운전이 왜 위험한지를 이해시켰어요. The police officer made the man understand why drunk driving is dangerous. 이해하다 means 'to understand' 이해시키다 means 'to make (someone) understand' 음주 means 'consumption of alcohol'
	제가 실업자라는 것이 저의 어머니를 실망시켰어요 The fact that I am unemployed made mu mother disappointed. 실망하다 means 'to be disappointed'
	저는 시험 전에 긴장하는 학생을 진정시켰어요. Before the exam, I made a nervous student releaxed. 진정하다 means 'to relax'
	저는 우리 아버지와 우리 어머니를 화해시켰어요. I made my mother and father reconcile. 화해하다 means 'to recocile' or 'to make up'
	저의 남자 친구가 저를 자꾸 자극시켰어요. My boyfriend kept cause me to be irritated. 자극하다 means 'to irritate'
	그들에게 뭘 시키는 건 정말 힘들어요. It's really hard to get them to do anything. Here 시키다 simply replaces 하다
