Interrupted action - (으)려던 참이다

Pattern: Verb stem + ()려던 참이다

The pattern Verb stem + ()려던 참이다 states an intended action that was interrupted.

The interrupted action can even be the speaker pausing to speak.

It is most commonly used in the first person ('I' or 'we').

In the form ()려는 참에 it can also be used to link two clauses in a sentence. This first clause is interrupted by the second clause.

Examples:
막 부르려던 참이었어요.
(I) was just about to call for (you).

means 'just now' (In this context it means 'just now' but it has a couple of different meanings)

부르 means 'to call out' or 'to shout'

막 밥을 먹으려던 참이었어요.
(I) was just about to eat.
막 점심을 먹으려던 참인데 같이 갈래요?
(I) was just about to have lunch. Shall (we) go together?
막 집에 가려던 참이었어요.
(I) was just about to go home.
경찰에 전화하려던 참이었어요.
(We) were about to call the police.
재우한테 전화를 하려던 참이었어요.
(I) was about to call Jaewoo.
가려던 참이었어요. 같이 갈래요?
(I) was just about to leave. Would you like to join me?
얼굴을 세수하고 잠을 자려던 참이었어요.
(I) was just about to wash my face and go to sleep.
막 잠들려던 참에 재우가 문을 두드렸어요.
Just as (I) was about to fall asleep, Jaewoo knocked on the door.
문을 막 여는 참에 그 소리를 들었어요.
As (I) was about to open the door, (I) heard the sound.
당신을 부르려는 참에 전화가 왔어요.
(I) was about to call you when the phone rang.
우리가 길을 나서려는 참에 갑자기 비가 왔어요.
As we were about to leave, it suddenly started to rain.
내가 전화를 하려던 참에 삼촌이 전화를 하셨어요.
When (I) was about to call, (my) uncle called.
버스를 타려던 참에 그를 만났어요.
(She) was about to catch the bus when (she) met him.
수영장에 가려던 참에 친구가 금요일에는 문을 닫는다고 말했어요.
(She) was about to go to the pool and (her) friend said it was closed on Fridays.
책을 사려던 참에 저는 돈이 없는 걸 알았어요.
(I) was just about to buy the book when (I) realized (I) didn't have the money.
그가 저를 돌아보려던 참에 저는 깨달았어요.
As he was about to turn to me, I realized.
차가 출발하려던 참에 그녀가 도착했어요.
She arrived just as her car was about to leave.
아버지께서 잠이 들려던 참에 벨 소리가 울렸어요.
As (her) father was about to fall asleep, the bell rang.
