Korean grammar - Do not - 지 마세요

Do not - 지 마세요

The Verb ending + 마세요 is used to form negative orders, demands or cautions.

The verb here is 말다 (to stop) so the 반말 (impolite) form is + . Normally to switch to the 존댓말 (polite) form we would simply add the . But here we have the addition of .

This comes from the inclusion of the honorific infix which honours the person who the verb refers to. In this case this is the listener because the order or demand is directed at him/her. This makes the direct order politer.

-- In fact the honorific infix is () but when combined with + 어요 it becomes 세요. Actually it should be 셔요 but in modern Korean this has become 세요.
