French grammar - Past participles for regular -IR and -RE verbs

Past participles for regular -IR & -RE verbs

So far we have seen past participles for regular -ER verbs.

The past participles for regular -IR and -RE verbs are also straight forward:

For regular -IR verbs we drop the final -r to leave the -i ending. So for example:

-- finir ('to finish') fini

-- choisir ('to choose') choisi

For regular -RE verbs we drop the -re ending and add -u. So for example:

-- attendre ('to wait') attendu

-- perdre ('to loose') perdu

The example phrases below include past participles for many more common -IR and -RE verbs.

Examples:
J'ai fini mes devoirs.
I have finished my homework.

finir (to finish) fini

Les filles, vous avez choisi des jupes ?
Girls, did you choose skirts?

choisir (to choose) choisi

Vos enfants ont beaucoup grandi.
Your (formal) children have grown a lot.

grossir (to gain weight, to get fat) grossi

Elle a guéri de la grippe.
She recovered from the flu.

guérir (to cure, to heal, to recover) guéri

Félicitations - vous avez maigri.
Congratulations - you (formal) have lost weight.

maigrir (to lose weight, to get thin) maigri

félicitations (f.pl) means 'congratulations'

Quand as-tu nourri les poissons ?
When did you (familiar) feed the fish?

nourrir (to feed, to nourish) nourri

Le chien a obéi à mon ordre de s'asseoir.
The dog obeyed my command to sit down.

obéir (to obey) obéi

Il a doucement puni le chien.
He gently punished the dog.

punir (to punish) puni

Il a réfléchi à la question et a ensuite décidé.
He thought through the issue and then decided.

réfléchir (to reflect, to think) réfléchi

ensuite means 'then' or 'next'

Le serveur a gentiment rempli cette tasse de café.
The waiter kindly refilled this cup of coffee.

remplir (to fill) rempli

gentiment (adv) means 'kindly' or 'nicely'

Nous avons enfin réussi.
We succeeded at last.

réussir (to succeed) réussi

Elle a rougi quand tu as raconté cette blague.
She blushed when you told that joke.

rougir (to blush, to turn red) rougi

blague (f) means 'joke'

raconter une blague (verb) means 'to tell a joke'

Et puis il a saisi la valise !
And then he grabbed the suitcase!

saisir (to seize, to grab) saisi

Le vin a vieilli en cave.
The wine has aged in the cellar.

vieillir (to age, grow old) vieilli

cave (f) means 'cellar'

en cave means 'in a cellar'

A-t-il attendu longtemps ?
Did he wait a long time?

attendre (to wait (for)) attendu

longtemps means 'a long time'

Oh là là - j'ai encore perdu mon portable.
Oh dear - I lost my cell phone again.

perdre (to lose) perdu

portable (m) means 'mobile phone' (short for téléphone portable)

J'ai entendu leur nouvelle chanson et je l'aime.
I have heard their new song and I like it.

entendre (to hear, to understand) entendu

Il a confondu les mots « météo » et « climat ».
He confused the words 'weather' and 'climate'.

confondre (to confuse, to mistake, to mix up) confondu

climat (m) means 'climate'

La récolte a toujours dépendu de la météo.
The harvest has always depended on the weather.

dépendre (to depend) dépendu

dépendre de (verb) means 'to depend on (something or someone)'

récolte (f) means 'harvest'

Votre glace a-t-elle également complètement fondu ?
Your ice-cream - has it completely melted as well?

fondre (to melt) fondu

complètement (adv) means 'completely'

La poule m'a mordu le doigt.
The hen bit my finger.

mordre (to bite) mordu

Oui, c'est ce qu'il a prétendu.
Yes, that's what he claimed.

prétendre (to claim) prétendu

J'ai rendu tous les livres à la bibliothèque.
I returned all the books to the library.
