Irregular -IR verbs - Part III

The third group of irregular -IR verbs are those that end in -ENIR.

The present tense conjugations are as follows:

Drop the -ENIR and add -iens for je, add -iens for tu, add -ient for il &elle, add -enons for nous, add -enez for vous and add -iennent for ils & elles.

Examples of this irregular group are:

venir - 'to come'

devenir - 'to become'

provenir - 'to come from' or 'to originate from'

se souvenir - 'to remember'

soutenir - 'to support' or 'to maintain'

obtenir - 'to get' or 'to achieve' or 'to obtain'

Je viens toujours dans ce parc après le travail.
I always come to this park after work.

venir (verb) means 'to come'

venir: drop -enir and add -iens je viens

D'où viens-tu ?
Where do you (familiar) come from?

venir: drop -enir and add -iens tu viens

Elle vient de Pologne.
She comes from Poland.

venir: drop -enir and add -ient elle vient

Pologne (f) means 'Poland'

Nous venons voir notre amie Charlotte.
We are coming to see our friend Charlotte.

venir: drop -enir and add -enons nous venons

venir voir means 'to come to see'

Vous venez souvent ici ?
Do you (formal) come here often?

venir: drop -enir and add -enez vous venez;

Ils viennent parfois dans notre restaurant.
They sometimes come to our restaurant.

venir: drop -enir and add -iennent ils viennent

parfois means 'sometimes'

Je te soutiens de tout cœur.
I support you whole-heartedly.

soutenir (verb) means 'to support' or 'to maintain'

de tout cœur means 'whole-heartedly'

Quand je suis triste, tu me soutiens.
When I'm sad, you support me.
Elle soutient son frère dans ses études.
She supports her brother in his studies.
Nous soutenons l'avis du patron.
We support the opinion of the boss.

avis (m) means 'opinion' or 'notice' or 'advice' or 'opinion'

Vous soutenez le président ?
Do you (formal) support the president?
Ces arcs - ils soutiennent la façade de l'église.
These arches - they support the facade of the church.

arc (m) means 'arch' or 'bow'

façade (f) means 'façade' or 'front (of a building)'

Il soutient qu'il a raison.
He maintains that he is right.

soutenir que means 'to maintain that'

avoir raison means 'to be right'

Il devient adolescent.
He is becoming a teenager.

devenir (verb) means 'to become'

adolescent (m) means 'teenager'

Je ne me souviens pas.
I do not remember.

se souvenir (verb) means 'to remember';

Te souviens-tu des paroles de cette chanson ?
Do you (familiar) remember the words of this song?

se souvenir de (verb) means 'to remember (something)'

parole (f) means 'word' or 'speech'

chanson(f) means 'song'

Il obtient un prêt auprès d'une banque.
He gets a loan from a bank.

obtenir (verb) means 'to get' or 'to achieve' or 'to obtain'

prêt (m) means 'loan'

banque (f) means 'bank'
