Using 刚 (gāng) or 刚刚 (gānggāng) to indicate 'just'

The word (gāng) is used to indicate that an action has just occurred recently or very shortly before the moment of speaking.

It is equivalent to the English word 'just' or 'just now' when referring to recent past actions.

The double 刚刚 (gānggāng) is similar to ; however it emphasizes the recency of the action even more strongly. It is like saying 'just now' or 'only just now'.

or 刚刚 is usually placed before the verb in a sentence.

Examples:
我刚吃了。
wǒ gāng chī le.
I just ate.
他刚毕业。
tā gāng bìyè.
He just graduated.
她刚洗澡。
tā gāng xǐzǎo.
She just now took a bath.
我们刚刚在湖里游泳。
wǒmen gānggāng zài hú lǐ yóuyǒng.
We only just swam in the lake.
我刚刚回家。
wǒ gānggāng huíjiā.
I only just now returned home.
孩子们刚刚睡着。
háizimen gānggāng shuìzháo.
The children only just now fell asleep.
商店刚刚开门。
shāngdiàn gānggāng kāimén.
The shop only just now opened.
他们刚刚结婚。
tāmen gānggāng jiéhūn.
They only just got married.
他刚做完作业。
tā gāng zuòwán zuòyè.
He just finished (doing) his homework.
他不饿,因为他刚刚吃了。
tā bù è,#yīnwèi tā gānggāng chī le.
He is not hungry because he only just now ate.
他刚修完车了吗?
tā gāng xiūwán chē le ma?
Did he just finish repairing the car?

修完 (xiūwán) means 'to finish repairing'

你刚刚吃完了饭吗?
nǐ gānggāng chīwán le fàn ma?
Did you just finish eating (a meal)?
我刚刚开始学中文。
wǒ gānggāng kāishǐ xué zhōngwén.
I just started learning Chinese.

开始 (kāishǐ) means 'start'

我刚写完作业。
wǒ gāng xiěwán zuòyè.
I just finished (writing) my homework.
