以为 (yǐwéi) means 'thought'

我以为你已经回家了。
wǒ yǐwéi nǐ yǐjīng huíjiā le.
I thought (wrongly) that you had already gone home.
他以为今天是星期五。
tā yǐwéi jīntiān shì xīngqīwǔ.
He thought (wrongly) that today was Friday.
