In Chinese, the demonstrative pronouns 这 () and 那 () are used to refer to a thing or object - like 'this (thing) or 'that (thing)' in English. • 这 is used for a thing close to the speaker. • 那 is used for a thing further from the speaker. In this form 这 and 那 can 'not' be used alone as adjectives (such as 'This book is..'). So 这书 ('this book') is incorrect. — How to use them in this way (as adjectives) will be covered in a later topic. |
