Chinese grammar - 'From' using 从 (cóng)

'From' using 从 (cóng)

In Chinese the preposition (cóng) means 'from', indicating the starting point of the action.

When used with (lái) it means 'to come from'.

When used with (qù) it means 'to go from [a place] to [another place]'.

Note that the structure of the sentence changes when is used - the verbs and appear after the prepositional component.

Examples:
他从学校来。
tā cóng xuéxiào lái.
He comes from school.

(cóng) means 'from'

我从图书馆来。
wǒ cóng túshūguǎn lái.
I come from the library.
她从商店来。
tā cóng shāngdiàn lái.
She comes from the store.
他们从家里来。
tāmen cóng jiālǐ lái.
They come from home.

家里 (jiā lǐ) means 'at home'

你从哪里来?
nǐ cóng nálǐ lái?
Where do you come from?
我从北京来。
wǒ cóng běijīng lái.
I come from Beijing.
他不从北京来,他从香港来。
tā bù cóng běijīng lái,#tā cóng xiānggǎng lái.
He does not come from Beijing, he comes from Hong Kong.

香港 (xiānggǎng) means 'Hong Kong'

他不从办公室来。
tā bù cóng bàngōngshì lái.
He does not come from the office.

but from somewhere else

她从医院来。
tā cóng yīyuàn lái.
She comes from the hospital.
我们从车站来。
wǒmen cóng chēzhàn lái.
We come from the station.

车站 (chēzhàn) means 'train station'

我从家里去学校。
wǒ cóng jiālǐ qù xuéxiào.
I go from home to school.
他从北京去上海。
tā cóng běijīng qù shànghǎi.
He goes from Beijing to Shanghai.
她从超市去图书馆。
tā cóng chāoshì qù túshūguǎn.
She goes from the supermarket to the library.

超市 (chāoshì) means 'supermarket'

你从哪里去机场?
nǐ cóng nǎlǐ qù jīchǎng?
Where are you going to the airport from?
我们从电影院去饭馆。
wǒmen cóng diànyǐngyuàn qù fànguǎn.
We go from the cinema to the restaurant.

电影院 (diànyǐngyuàn) means 'cinema'

饭馆 (fànguǎn) means 'restaurant'
