Frequency words

Adverbs that express frequency of action or state are placed before the verb.

Here are a few common Chinese frequency adverbs:

We have already seen 常常 (chángcháng) means 'often'

总是 (zǒngshì) means 'always'

通常 (tōngcháng) means 'usually'

有时候 (yǒushíhou) means 'sometimes'

很少 (hěnshǎo) means 'rarely'

从不 (cóngbù) means 'never'

几乎不 (jīhū bù) means 'hardly ever'

Examples:
他常常去图书馆。
tā chángcháng qù túshūguǎn.
He often goes to the library.

常常 (chángcháng) means 'often'

我常常跑步。
wǒ chángcháng pǎobù.
I often go jogging.

跑步 (pǎobù) means 'to run'

她总是迟到。
tā zǒngshì chídào.
She is always late.

总是 (zǒngshì) means 'always'

我们通常在家吃饭。
wǒmen tōngcháng zài jiā chīfàn.
We usually eat at home.

通常 (tōngcháng) means 'usually'

他有时候打篮球。
tā yǒushíhou dǎ lánqiú.
He sometimes plays basketball.

有时候 (yǒu shíhou) means 'sometimes'

她很少吃甜食。
tā hěnshǎo chī tiánshí.
She rarely eats sweets.

很少 (hěn shǎo) means 'rarely'

甜食 (tiánshí) means 'dessert'

他几乎不喝酒。
tā jīhūbù hē jiǔ.
He hardly ever drinks alcohol.

几乎不 (jīhū bù) means 'almost never'

我从不吸烟。
wǒ cóngbù xīyān.
I never smoke.

从不 (cóng bù) means 'never'

他很少看书。
tā hěnshǎo kàn shū.
He rarely reads books.
她从不迟到。
tā cóngbù chídào.
She is never late.
他几乎不吃肉。
tā jīhūbù chī ròu.
He hardly ever eats meat.
我总是忘记钥匙。
wǒ zǒngshì wàngjì yàoshi.
I always forget the keys.
