Expressing frequency using 次 (cì)

In Chinese, the counter (cì) is used to express frequency, indicating how many times an action occurs.

It is often placed after the verb to show the number of times an action is performed.

It is like saying 'X times' in English.

Examples:
她每天跑步一次。
tā měitiān pǎobù yí cì.
She runs once a day.
我昨天看了那本书三次。
wǒ zuótiān kàn le nà běn shū sān cì.
I read that book three times last year.
他每天吃药两次。
tā měitiān chī yào liǎng cì.
He takes medicine twice a day.

(yào) means 'medicine'

我们上周见了他两次。
wǒmen shàngzhōu jiàn le tā liǎng cì.
We saw him twice last week.

上周 (shàng zhōu) means 'last week'

她每月来这里一次。
tā měiyuè lái zhèlǐ yí cì.
She comes here once a month.

每月 (měi yuè) means 'every month'

我昨晚醒了三次。
wǒ zuówǎn xǐng le sān cì.
I woke up three times last night.
他每年去旅行两次。
tā měinián qù lǚxíng liǎng cì.
He travels twice a year.

每年 (měi nián) means 'every year'

她每周打扫房间一次。
tā měizhōu dǎsǎo fángjiān yí cì.
She cleans her room once a week.
他每天练习钢琴两次。
tā měitiān liànxí gāngqín liǎng cì.
He practices piano twice a day.

练习 (liànxí) means 'practice'

钢琴 (gāngqín) means 'piano'

我上个月见了医生一次。
wǒ shànggèyuè jiàn le yīshēng yí cì.
I saw the doctor once last month.
她今年去了上海两次。
tā jīnnián qù le Shànghǎi liǎng cì.
She went to Shanghai twice this year.
我每天喝茶三次。
wǒ měitiān hē chá sān cì.
